Sex Addiction
Disclaimer: Sex addiction is considered an out-dated and shaming term that has lost favor in the sex therapy community. It is mainly used here due to it being a more recognizable term to the general population. More favored terms are out of control sexual behavior or sexual compulsivity.
Individuals struggling with sexual compulsivity often report feeling like they can’t control the behaviors. The behaviors commonly present as hypersexuality, excessive use of pornography, infidelity, risky sex, lying or secrecy, and others.
These compulsive behaviors then result in a negative consequence for the individual and couple. Possible negative consequences include distrust, contracting a sexually transmitted infection, loss of relationships, shame, unmet needs, etc.
Treatment
Treatment of out of control sexual behaviors is similar to any other sex therapy case. The behavior is typically an attempt to get an emotional need met so in session it is important that we understand the moment-to-moment experience. This understanding does not involve shame but instead compassion. We’ll discuss and educate around areas such as emotion regulation and accountability. We understand you are in pain and there is another way. Both individuals and couples are welcome.
“Sexual compulsivity is a way that some people learn to get their needs met which is often emotion-based. The hard part is that when this is our go-to in a relationship, it often pushes us farther away from getting those needs met.”
